Dear Scabby,

Would you say using drugs to explore other realms of consciousness, instead of doing it through meditation or other sort of manual ways, is in a way cheating? Would you consider drugs a short cut way to attain knowledge and vision or can different degrees of information be attained depending on the method used?

I would say that depends the drug and the user’s personal circumstances and motivation. There’s no cut and dry answer to such a question.

Personally, I’m drug-free for many years and seeking a spiritual awakening of the ”educational variety” rather than some ”short-cut” White LIght Burning Bush Pie in the Sky thing.

But that’s just me. For other people, the use of psychotropic substances may be the best, most effective method to attain a higher understanding. Different strokes…

On that tip, there’s a fascinating book on the subject which I would highly recommend. Daniel Pinchbeck’s “BREAKING OPEN THE HEAD” is a sort of definitive study of the psychedelic experience and its shamanic origins, traditions and spiritual applications in different cultures and occult esoteric practices worldwide. You should definitely check it out.
