Dear Scabby,

Would you say the real way to rid yourself of inhibitions is the death of the ego, as Charles Manson said it.

Honestly, Manson didn’t ”say” it in the way you seem to imply here. Rather, he simply parroted it.

That basic concept of ridding oneself of Ego for the advancement of the soul is the cornerstone of the teachings of Christ, Buddha and all the other great spiritual teachers throughout humanity’s history, all the way down the line.

While I don’t believe there can ever be a complete ”death” to the ego while the soul is living a human experience in this human form, I do believe the offending ego can and must be contained and disciplined in order to achieve any sort of happiness and fulfillment from the human experience.

While the ego is there to help us survive and prosper in the material world, it must be kept to its right size to avoid it taking over completely causing people to live solely in a hellish realm of savage animal instincts run amok.

Almost all of humanity’s greatest tragedies, in fact, are the result of misdirected instincts run wild. Once the ego is reduced to its intended purpose as a the bodyguard, not the Boss, one can begin to achieve emotional balance and a truce between one’s ”higher” and ”lower” selves. At least I think so.

Hope this helps.
